Ordering on our platform
Create an account
If you are an individual
You must be at least 18 years old to register a Takealot account to shop on our platform. You must also be legally able to enter into contracts in South Africa.
If you are a business
If you are a business, you can register a Takealot business account subject to these additional business terms.
You warrant that all information you submit to Takealot about yourself or your business is accurate and up to date.
Start shopping
- Pick your item, add it to your cart and go to checkout.
- Pay and receive your order confirmation.
Your order is only complete once you have paid and received an order confirmation.
Your payment method is important because the sooner you pay for your order, the sooner we can source stock of the items in your order.
If you add items to your wish list or cart, it does not mean you have reserved or ordered them, and it does not guarantee that you can purchase those items later at the same price.
Who you’re buying from
You may order items on our platform from Takealot and other sellers.
If you are buying from other sellers, the seller’s trading name and “sold by” will appear on the product description page of each item.
If another seller’s details do not appear on the product description page, you are buying the product directly from Takealot.
Buying from other sellers on our platform
Sellers are responsible for the items they sell on our platform. This includes providing an invoice, making sure the item is in stock, keeping the product information accurate, and getting the item to our warehouse so we can deliver it to you as quickly as possible.
When more than one seller offers the same product for sale on our platform, they may charge different prices, or one may offer a discount while the other does not.
Cancelling your order or an item
Takealot may, for any reason, cancel your order or an item in your order after you receive your order confirmation. Sellers on our platform may also, for any reason, cancel an item they are responsible for. For example, if:
- an item is out of stock;
- you don’t pay for the item according to the terms of the payment method you selected;
- we discover an error in the listing information of an item, including its pricing; or
- you are being investigated for, or found guilty of, criminal activity or abuse of your Takealot account.
You may cancel an order if there is a ‘cancel’ button on the order details page of your Takealot account. Once you have initiated a cancellation, you cannot stop the process.
If an order or item is cancelled, we will refund you the amount paid for that cancelled order or item.
Items with special rules
Buying a TV
When you buy a television, you must give us your valid TV licence number and the account holder's identity number.
Buying liquor or vaping items
You must be at least 18 years old to buy or accept delivery of liquor or vaping items.
If we cannot verify your age, or the age of the person who accepts delivery, we will not sell or deliver the items. We may request you and or the person accepting delivery of the items to show us your/their ID, passport, or driver's license to verify your/their age.
Discount deals
Each seller determines the pricing and discounts (“deals”) offered on their items on our platform. We will display the terms of each deal on the relevant product description page. You must follow all the terms of the deal to qualify for it.
Deals are valid for a limited period but may expire sooner if Takealot or the seller runs out of the allocated amount of stock of the deal item.
Bundle Deals
A Bundle Deal is an assortment of items that you can buy in a single bundle to qualify for a discount. The seller may apply a discounted price to individual items in the bundle.
A pre-packed Bundle Deal is an assortment of items combined into a single unit at a discounted price. One discounted price is offered for the entire bundle, not for the individual items in the bundle.
Takealot gift vouchers
We want to make it simple for you to use or give a gift voucher. Gift vouchers are valid for 3 years from the date of issue – so there is plenty of time for shopping! Just remember, vouchers don’t earn interest over time. Here’s what you must know:
Using gift vouchers
- When you are ready to shop, you can redeem your gift voucher on your Takealot or Mr D account. Takealot or Mr D will then credit the full value of the voucher to your account as a non-refundable credit, which you can use for a complete or partial payment of your Takealot or Mr D order. If what you are buying costs more than your voucher amount, no problem - just pay the rest by using any of our other payment options.
- Some gift vouchers may have extra conditions printed on the voucher, so be sure to read and comply with them.
- Once a gift voucher has been delivered to the email address you provided, we cannot take responsibility for any loss, unauthorised use, or sharing of the voucher.
What you can’t do
- You can't use your gift voucher to buy another gift voucher or pay for a TakealotMORE subscription.
- You can’t return a gift voucher for a refund or exchange it for cash.
Takealot coupons
We love giving you coupons! Here is what you must know to make the most of them:
Getting started
- You will need a verified mobile number on your Takealot account to use coupons.
- Not all international numbers can be verified - if yours isn't supported, you won't be able to use coupons.
Using your coupons
- Some coupons work on any item, while others work on specific products or categories.
- Some coupons give you a fixed amount off (e.g. R100), while others give you a percentage off (e.g.10%).
- You can use a coupon only once.
- You can use one coupon per order.
- Apply your coupon at checkout.
- If your coupon doesn't cover your full order, pay the rest using any of our other payment methods.
What you can’t do
- You can’t use coupons to buy airtime or gift vouchers.
- You can’t exchange coupons for cash.
- You can't get refunds on coupons.
Important
We may correct, cancel, or decline a coupon for any reason, including for misuse.
Once a coupon has been issued, we cannot take responsibility for any loss, unauthorised use, or sharing of the coupon.
Paying for your order
How to pay for your orders
You must pay for your order by using any payment method available at checkout. You must be authorised to make a payment on behalf of the Takealot account holder.
For more information about our different payment methods, please visit our Help Centre.
Payment service providers
Each payment service provider has its own terms and conditions. You accept those terms and conditions when you choose their payment method at checkout.
The payment service provider is responsible for the security of the payment method you choose and any personal information you provide during the payment process.
Receiving your order
Delivery options
You can choose to collect your items from a Takealot Pickup Point, or we can deliver orders to your chosen address in South Africa. To ensure a smooth delivery, we need your correct delivery address.
You cannot collect liquor or large items from a Takealot Pickup Point - we must deliver them to your chosen address.
Delivery fees
We may charge you a delivery fee to deliver your order to your chosen address or to a selected Takealot Pickup Point. The delivery fee will be displayed at checkout.
We may change our delivery fees at any time without notice. Our most updated delivery fees are available in the Help Centre.
When do we deliver?
Delivery times may vary and are determined by the items you order, the payment method, and the location you choose for delivery or collection, as explained in our Help Centre. We provide our delivery estimates on the product description page to help you shop, but always check your order’s estimated delivery date at checkout for the most accurate delivery information.
When someone accepts or collects the order at your chosen address or at a Takealot Pickup Point, your order is considered delivered. You must make sure that the person who accepts delivery or collects the order on your behalf has your permission to do so.
When is a sale concluded?
Once you’ve paid for and we’ve delivered, or you’ve collected, the item, that item is officially yours to enjoy and care for.
You may not resell items
Do not resell any item purchased on our platform. If you do, we may suspend or terminate your Takealot account and cancel any pending orders.
Returning an item
If you want to return an item after delivery or collection, our Returns Policy applies.

The platform content is the property of Takealot, its advertisers, sponsors, or is licensed to Takealot. The content is protected by law, and you may not use, distribute, or reproduce it without the property owner’s written consent.
We may change, suspend, or terminate our platform at any time without notice.
Keeping your Takealot account secure
Please keep your username and password private. This is to keep your information safe and to prevent anyone from misusing your Takealot account. You carry the risk of unauthorised and fraudulent activities on your Takealot account. If you suspect or know that there is unauthorised access to your Takealot account, you must notify us immediately. You must also take steps to mitigate any resultant loss by changing your password and blocking the payment cards you loaded onto your Takealot account.
We may, at any time and for any reason, suspend or terminate your Takealot account.
You promise to use our site responsibly
You agree that you will not:
- use any device, software, or other instrument to interfere with the operation of our platform;
- use any robot, spider, other automatic device, or manual process to monitor, copy, distribute, or modify our platform or its content, except for technology used by internet search websites to direct internet users to our platform; and

Using our platform
Secure shopping
We are committed to providing you with a safe and enjoyable shopping experience. Our team works hard to maintain a secure platform and provide helpful customer support.
However, like all online platforms, there are some risks involved with internet shopping that are beyond our control.
By using our platform, you understand and accept that you do so at your own risk, and you or your representative cannot hold us responsible for any loss, damage, or costs that you may experience when you use our platform, except where the law requires us to take responsibility.
We encourage you to shop safely by:
- keeping your Takealot account details secure;
- reading product descriptions carefully; and
- contacting us if you have any concerns.
Platform availability and accurate information
We're committed to keeping our website available for you to shop whenever you need – day or night. We also work hard to ensure that all the information on our platform is accurate and up-to-date, including product descriptions, availability, pricing, and delivery costs.
Sometimes mistakes happen, but once we know about them, we will fix them as quickly as possible. We ask that you be patient with us if this ever happens.
While we do our best to prevent errors, we can't be held responsible for any loss, damage, or costs you may experience because of these mistakes, except where the law requires us to take responsibility.
What others say on our platform
Our platform includes content from other people, such as customer reviews, seller descriptions, and advertisers’ content. We value these contributions, but we want you to know that they are the opinions and statements of other users, not ours.
We are not responsible for what other people say or post on our platform, so please use your own judgment when reading reviews and other user-generated content.
Keeping your device safe
We work hard to secure our platform and keep it protected from viruses, malware, and other software that could harm your devices. However, we recommend you also take simple steps to keep your devices and information safe, such as:
- keeping your security software updated;
- being careful when downloading files; and
- trusting your instincts if something seems suspicious.
By using our platform, you understand and accept that there are some security risks involved with internet browsing, unless any issues are caused by serious mistakes or intentional wrongdoing on our part.
Resolving disputes
Our priority is to work things out together
We care about your shopping experience and want to resolve any issues quickly and fairly. If something goes wrong, please start by contacting our Customer Support team via the Help Centre; most problems can be easily resolved this way.
If we can’t reach an agreement
We understand that disagreements sometimes happen.
These terms and any disputes arising from them are governed by South African law. This simply means that South African law will guide how we resolve any disagreements between you and Takealot or other sellers.
You and we agree that the High Court of South Africa (Western Cape Division, Cape Town) will have jurisdiction to hear any legal matters between us. This applies even if the disputed amount would typically be heard by a lower court. This is to help ensure consistency in how cases are handled.
Remember: Our goal is always to resolve issues before they become formal disputes. We encourage you to reach out to us first – most problems have simple solutions.
About our agreement
Our agreement includes:
- these terms;
- our Returns Policy;
- our Privacy Policy;
- the payment terms shown at checkout; and
- any other rules we expressly say apply, for example, in our Help Centre.
If there is ever a difference between any of the documents that form part of our agreement, these terms will apply first, unless we clearly say that another document should apply instead.
While we may change any provision of our agreement at any time without giving you notice, we will publish those changes on our platform. Any change we make takes effect from the date we publish it on our platform. You accept the change when you use our platform after the change is made.
If a court decides that any part of our agreement is invalid or unenforceable, all the other parts will still apply and remain in effect.
If either you or we fail to enforce a right under our agreement at some point, it does not mean we have given up that right forever. We can still use it later if needed.
You may not cede, assign, or otherwise transfer your rights and obligations under our agreement to anybody else.
